The UK's charging network looks nothing like it did even two years ago. New hardware, smarter software and firmer policy are converging to iron out the range anxiety and charger-hunting that once put drivers off going electric.
Transport remains one of the biggest hurdles on the road to net zero, and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure must keep pace if that target is to be met.

The biggest shift in EV infrastructure right now is bidirectional charging. Rather than only pulling power in, newer EVs and wallboxes can send electricity back out, whether that means powering a tool on-site, backing up a home during an outage or feeding surplus energy into the public grid for a credit. A supportive policy backdrop has kept the UK's EV infrastructure on solid footing, especially compared with regions wheregovernments have softened pro-EV mandates under pressure from established carmakers. Steady rules give installers and investors the confidence to keep building out the network rather than pausing due to uncertainty.
6. Charger Density Is Catching Up With Demand
Coverage gaps remain the most-cited frustration with EV infrastructure, and the numbers back that up. In the U.S., roughly 64% of drivers live within 2 miles of a public charging station, leaving around 36% facing longer trips, which add up quickly in heavy traffic or at peak times.
Europe's public network expanded sharply too, crossing the million-charging-point mark in 2024. However, growth still varies widely by country, depending on local EV adoption and how quickly infrastructure has caught up with demand.
